Chris Milk’s The Wilderness Downtown project has been making a big splash across the web for the past couple of days, and for good reason. Using the Arcade Fire song “We Used To Wait” as its backdrop and HTML 5 , Google Chrome and Google Maps as its tools, The Wilderness Downtown could signal the start of a new way of watching video.
If you can put away any thoughts of the following words – “Google”, “Invasion” and “Privacy” – then there’s plenty to enjoy here from the comfort of your own PC. By typing in the postcode of where you were brought up, this interactive experience will portray a version of “you”, superimposed onto Google Maps and running through the same streets as you did when you were a kid, before allowing you the opportunity to write your young self some sage words of advice.
You can then share your “postcard” with others if you wish, or keep it a secret. And what did I tell myself with all those years of experience that have passed between the joyous, athletic, enthusiastic me back then and the older, fatter, angrier me that exists now? I couldn’t really say, suffice to tell you it involved Angela McArthur, a lollypop and the bike sheds.
