It’s fair to say that the French have always been one step ahead when it comes to the more erotic arts than us staid, repressed English, so it isn’t much of a surprise that we find out they will be the first country in Europe to get a 3D video-on-demand service for porn films.

Marc Dorcel Television, the company behind the service, will be teaming up with fellow French firm 3DLized to co-produce the programming and make the channel available on French IPTV platform FREE, through subscription fees.

According to the Hollywood Reporter, there will be more than 60 different movies to watch on launch, shot in 3D and HD, and it seems that Marc Dorcel will be casting his net into more specialist arenas, eventually categorizing different films into groups. So for those looking for ‘less mainstream’ material, I would expect most bases will be covered.

It is expected that the service will eventually come to the UK, despite the likelihood of the Daily Mail and its readers to simultaneously explode with incandescent rage upon hearing the news.

The team at Marc Dorcel may be the first to bring 3D porn to European screens, but are highly unlikely to be the last. 3D offers the industry an opportunity to claw back some of those subscriptions that have been lost thanks to the huge amount of free porn that has recently become available on the Internet. Or so the boyfriend tells me, anyway.

But don’t feel too sorry for them. Marc Dorcel’s company still manages just fine, with a turnover of 20 million Euro according to an article in Digital Versus, half of which is made up of VOD subscriptions. Ever get the feeling you are working in the wrong business?
