The more hardcore owners of the PS3 and Xbox 360 have always taken pot shots at each other about whose machine is “the best”, but an adjudication by the Advertising Standards Agency has given Sony fans a real boost to the ammunition stockpile.
The ASA have been dealing with a complaint about a TV advertisement promoting the video game Final Fantasy XIII by developers Square Enix for the Xbox 360. The problem was, the footage was actually taken from a PS3 version of the game.
The viewer who made the complaint told the ASA that he/she believed the PS3 version shown on the ad was sharper than the actual 360 footage, having watched it and compared it on their HDTV.
Ever vigilant, the ASA decided to test it out for themselves (if there’s a position going for that job, I’m applying) and, to the sound of jubilant Sony fans all over the world, announced their findings; that “there was a discernable difference in the picture quality of the two…..the PS3 image in video sequences appeared sharper and colours were more vivid than those of the Xbox 360.”
Naturally, Square Enix deny any wrong doing, stating that they had no intention of duping the public and had simply used full motion cut scenes in the ad, rather than actual gameplay.
However, the ASA has concluded that the games developers will not be allowed to screen the ad again in its current form, as it has been deemed “misleading” – cue laughs of derision from PS3 fanboys directed at their Xbox contemporaries.
