If you’re looking for a new phone and are anything like our American cousins, you may be feeling the Google Android love a little more than a chunk of Apple………
A research report by ChangeWave suggests that between now and the summer, 30% of prospective mobile phone buyers in the United States are likely to buy an Android-based handset, against 29% who may go for the iPhone – a huge leap by five times the amount that was expected to occur last September.
The reason is fairly straight-forward; a good batch of smartphones. The Motorola Milestone and HTC Hero have both been success stories and although the Nexus One has received a fair amount of stick from some quarters, Google are still claiming a win.
Add in the latest of HTC’s efforts – the Desire and the Legend – and you’ve got a strong squad of Android-based phones that combined together are more than capable of taking on the iPhone.
As for the rest of the market: Blackberry was expected to be the choice of 13% of new buyers; Palm gathered 3% and Windows Mobile phones such as the HTC HD2 , 5%.
It is expected that the iPhone will pull back into the lead with the rumoured launch of the iPhone 4G/HD later this year, although it is clear that that lead will be considerably cut. It appears that we may finally be at a stage where Apple have some serious competition – and that can only be a good thing…………

I\’ve previously had the iPhone and i\’ve just bought the new Andriod Desire. All i can say is wow. There are so many things that i find wrong with the iPhone. I dont like the way the screen doesnt work when you\’re wearing gloves, and if you\’ve been in the UK this year you\’ll know what i mean. The app store is an annoyance too, when you select an app to install the store closes meaning if you want to install another application you have to open the app store again. Andriod just queues the downloads and lets you get on with it.
The specifications of the Desire are impressive too. With a 1GHz processor compared to 600MHz and 300MHz for the iPhone 3G 8GB and the iPhone 3Gs respectively. This speed difference is very noticable. The desire is just rapid!
If it\’s a toss up between the desire and the iphone, i would get the desire hands down.
Er……sorry, new iPhone 4G will kick everyone\’s butt. Apple always get it right. Plus there\’s only like 1 % in it at the moment. I guarantee that will be a 10% difference in Apples favour by september
I\’m not sure if i agree with you Jon. Whilst the andriod is pretty cool, a few of my friends have them, i still think it lacks that little spark which Apple do so well.
That being said, i find most of Apples products not as intuitive as i would expect from a company like that.
