A little while back, we reported that Microsoft had had their expensively-clad wrists slapped by US courts, after infringing a patent regarding XML processes held by a small Canadian company, i4i.

The courts ruled that Microsoft would be banned from selling Word and Office in the States from January 11th and although the technology giants recently appealed, the courts have upheld the original punishment.

In what is a clear “one in the eye from the little guy” situation, i4i are, naturally, delighted; “i4i is especially pleased with the court’s decision to uphold the injunction, an important step in protecting the property rights of small inventors” said Michael Vulpe, founder, in a press statement.

And we couldn’t agree more – too many times the big boys get it their own way. More money means more lawyers and this often leads to more favourable decisions, so every once in a while. it’s nice to see David slinging the odd stone at Goliath and coming out on top.

Microsoft have stated that they are removing the offending XML features from new versions of Word and Office, which will be ready for market by the time the ban comes to force.
