The amount of tariffs out there on the market can seem daunting and more than a little confusing. But before you close your eyes, circle your finger in the air and slam it down on a list of tariffs, crying “that one!”, you need to have a serious think about your phone usage. Whether you’re a text freak, music fan or hold the national record for longest ever phonecall, there really is a package for you out there somewhere. Here’s some tips on what to look for.

*Good deals can be found and the price of calls and services has dropped dramatically over the last few years, but you will need to sit down, work out how long you use your phone for over a month and base your decision on that.

*Know your budget

*Don’t waver, or be drawn to a fantastic amount of minutes/texts on offer if you aren’t going to use them – you’re just wasting money.

*Don’t automatically think a contract will end up cheaper than Pay As You Go. Most new contracts are 12-18 months in length and if you can afford the one-off fee for the phone,  its yours forever, regardless of how much credit you top up – £5 a month is more than enough for a light user.

* Keep an eye out for extra charges which can be as unwelcome as Madonna in a Malawi village. Internet services, data transfer, using your phone abroad and phoning outside of your contract minutes can all leave a sting in your pocket.

* Always read the small print.
